Engine burps when under a load

My ISX burps when pulling a hill under a load and a puff of smoke rolls out. The check engine comes on and the the fault code says it is egr temp. I replaced the egr and that did not correct the problem. I am thinking that maybe my mufflers are clogged with soot and it is restricting the exhaust. Has anyone experiences this problem?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Doesn't that motor have a Holset Variable Geometry Turbo on it? If so it could be the actuator on the turbo. They have had trouble out of that turbo.

Mine did the same.we took it apart. There is a plate that gets cracks and the variable fins catch on it.I had a new actuator but that didn't help.Cummins put on new turbo. Its ok now.My fuel mileage dropped 4 1/10s in a 5 day period. That told me something was wrong.
