Importation of Trucks manufactured from Glider Kits

Transport Canada has determined that vehicles,

classed as trucks and manufactured from “glider

kits” that are less than fifteen years old, are inadmissible

for importation into Canada due to the

lack of certification that demonstrates that these vehicles comply with all applicable CMVSS or FMVSS.

Vehicle Identification Transport Canada notes that the 17 digit glider

kit identification numbers provided by glider kit manufacturers are

not valid VINs as per CMVSS 115.

Registration

All legislation, regulation, policy and procedures pe

rtaining to the registration and licensing of

glider kit built vehicles fall under provincial

and territorial authorities. This includes

specification of required support documents and determination of how the vehicle will be

described within the vehicle registry

i.e., make, model, year, and status.

Summary:

1.

“Glider kits” are assemblages of parts and not

considered vehicles and therefore are not

regulated by Transport Canada.

2.

Trucks and truck tractors ma

nufactured from glider kits

in the U.S are inadmissible for

importation into Canada.

3.

For vehicles manufactured from “glider kits

” in Canada, Transport Canada’s position

mirrors the US

Code of Federal Regulati

ons Title 49 - PART 571.7 (e)

What problems do you think you might have? Are you talking about being a resident of Canada and buying a glider in the US and then taking it to Canada for registration? Are you talking about just driving a glider into Canada?

I know that you can order a Glider from the Freightliner dealer here in Quebec City. I assume that any other dealer can do the same. If you want to buy one in the States and the dealer does not know how to proceed, I would call any customs broker, they would be a good place to start and would know how to handle any importing problems.

otherword you can hire a custom broker they will do everything for you they have to have the title in had 1st

and you have to pay HST or in your case Alberta tax or the pro rate tax

contact

Crossborder they are a part of cole custom broker they will set eveything up for you.

Any updates on importing a Fitzgerald glider kit into Canada for 2013?

I heard a rumor of problems, and found one individual online who posted that he cannot import his new( unknown builder) glider , and the whole mess is now in his lawyers hands.

I have not contacted fitzgerald myself-yet

Ugh- I waited too long to pull the trigger on that deal.

Looks like I'll have it build locally or modify a new one. Or just keep running my 99 freightliner. But it's not cheap to keep up on it either.
