Brett and John, it's Asphaltine. You need to get Cummins Fleetguard Asphaltine Treatment by Cummins Filtration. It is sold at Peterbilt, KW and Cummins dealers.

I've yet to find a KW dlr that handles anything for asphaltine. One cummins dlr can order something that is 14.00 a qt and only treat 30-40 gals of fuel. That works out to 105.. does that sound right?

Yes, it does.

Yeah , Zach is right - deff asphaltene , I got 2000 ISX 500 and it took me lots of money and time untill I figure out it must be asphaltene .You can either try Fleetguard product or a product by Penray - I called Pittsburgh Power and they work with them , got recommendation for it .The asphaltene issue in my truck - when hot outside - above 85F - truck was not running right , and was trowing code when coasting downhill, even a slight downhill - fuel value pressure too low , after $ 3000 - new fuel pump and shut off return valve solenoid and washed out tanks , it was still doing it when hot outside , still doing it sometimes even with the addictive

if it is slimy black substance, it is algae; if it is gritty, it is asphaltine. if not clogging filters, then likely asphaltine. i think i had heard that you will see this more in cummins, but the oil from which the fuel was refined is the issue. i think also there is a treatment (additive) for fuel. you can draw some fuel from your tanks and have it tested.

The additive should be easily available at KW dealerships or Cummins shops.

Mine do the same thing! I've treated for algae numerous times with no change. I can't get rid of it.

Fleetguard Asphaltine Treatment

5 gal $196.18 Rocky mountain Cummings in El Paso has it. It will sand blast your injectors if it's bad enough. Schaffer oil also has a treatment for it
