Is a truck number required to be on the truck?

The rules that I see all say the DOT number has to be on the truck, but I don't see any requirement for a truck number. Any one know of a regulation requiring a truck number be on the truck?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

No a truck number is not required to be on the vehicle. Here is a link to the regulation.

On trucks that do not have a number, what does the driver write on his DVIR in the space designated "truck number" or "vehicle number"?

last 6 of the vin.

The regulation just says you shall identify the vehicle. A VIN would definitely identify the vehicle. It's just as easy to make a truck number for each vehicle though. Here is a link to the regulation.

(2) Report content. The report shall identify the vehicle and list any defect or deficiency discovered by or reported to the driver which would affect the safety of operation of the vehicle or result in its mechanical breakdown. If no defect or deficiency is discovered by or reported to the driver, the report shall so indicate. In all instances, the driver shall sign the report. On two-driver operations, only one driver needs to sign the driver vehicle inspection report, provided both drivers agree as to the defects or deficiencies identified. If a driver operates more than one vehicle during the day, a report shall be prepared for each vehicle operated.

I can tell you that I have not had a number on my trailer for 10 years, never been an issue. That does not mean it is legal, just have not had an issue with it.

My trailer has an assigned number, it is just not "on" the trailer. DVIR requires that you write in vehicle numbers on the report.

I don't have numbers on mine either. As long as VIN numbers match for inspection stickers I cannot see how it would matter.

No, it is not required but I know in ID State they record your DOT number and the truck number at the scale. If they don't see the truck number then they could ask you to come inside and then they will ask you what it is along with 500 other questions. This does not happen every time but it has with me.

I am in a power only operation and was told once during an inspection that I must use the vin as the ID # if the trailer did not have one I would have to guess it would apply to the tractor as well
