Is this a good routine maintenance procedure?

I keep thinking I should have a valve adjustment done after new liners were put into my 05 mbe 4000...almost 260,000 miles ago...truck is running fine w/ 90 day mpg at 8.33, but every tech I talk to says leave it alone with the fuel mpg that good...I always heard this overhead should be done every year...any comments?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

As a Cummins mechanic I would have to agree don't fix something that ain't broke. If you are getting fuel mileage that good I wouldn't touch it.

Everyone I've talked to about this has said the same thing. If there are no problems evident (poor fuel mileage, bad oil samples, etc) leave it alone.

Kevin even states the same thing. He doesn't believe in doing certain maintenance to the truck at certain mileage intervals just because. If you're sampling your oil and monitoring your mileage properly you'll notice when there starts to be a problem well before its costly.

I'd leave it alone with 8.33 mpg, the tech could get in there and not set the overhead correctly and you could lose quite a bit.

I am a true believer in doing maintenance when the manufacture suggest I took upon myself to stretch a overhead one time by 75000 miles and ended up costing myself 5000 dollars in repair related to not doing the overhead.
