What filter to use for an air compressor.

I'm thinking about disconnecting air compressor, on 12.7 Detroit, from the air intake and installing a separate filter. I'm not sure what filter size to use. Any ideas?

I used a smog filter off my old Chevy pickup. I had upgraded the pickup to a K & N filer and it had a separate smog filter. I traded the pickup in on the cash for clunkers program and they would let you take parts off so I took the filters. Last year I decided to try it and it fit right on.

Update 06/03/12

I uploaded a picture for you. I used everything that was already there, the same air line and fitting that was screwed into the manifold. I just screwed the filter right on that fitting. Then I got a plug from the shop to plug the hole in the manifold.

Thanks a lot Jackie! I appreciate it.

Your welcome. I was in Pep boys the other day and they had breather filters that were similar to the one I have for $10 or so.

First I don't know why you would do that. I can see no practical reason to do that. It's hooked up that way to supply the air compressor with not only filtered air but it supplies it with compressed air while running down the road making the air compressor run more efficiently. I would consult with someone at Detroit before I pursued this alteration.''italic text''

I did talk to Detroit before I did mine. They told me that it's easier for them to just take the clean air from the intake rather than have a separate filter for it. They could see no problem arising from me changing mine.

I changed it back in Sept 2011 and have had no problems at all.

I did see an increase in my turbo boost though since the air compressor is no longer robbing my engine of air.

The people that I know that have done this use a K&N filter for a motorcycle, kind of a cone shaped one.

unless you have a large air leak your compresser shouldnt run that much. And air compresser dosnt take that much air.
