When I back up sometimes the breaks "grind". Replaced the drums and shoes on both sides in Sep 11. It feels like it is coming from the left side.

My steer axle brakes do the same thing. Problem started after have shoes replaced, did not do it with old brake shoes. I had my mechanic double check everything and he said all was proper. I've just learned to live with it. I think maybe the quality of the new shoes is different than the old.

Brakes are designed for maximum efficiency with forward motion, from my experience what your hearing is normal. That's if I'm understanding your question correctly. Higher the speed is where you probably hearing the grinding or I think it's more of a chatter noise while backing up.

Good luck

It could also be dirt in the drum. Otherwise I would check to make sure the shoes are not staying against the drum after application.

Replacing the Teflon pad on your 5th wheel made your brakes stop "grinding"??? I run a Teflon pad on my 5th wheel, but my steer axle brakes still make that noise when backing up.
