If you call a Detroit garage they can tell you for sure. I have to say that it is an EGR motor because its over a year older than the big change over which was October of 2002. However it might be a recon in which case it could still be pre egr. Where is the motor? If its still in a truck look for the tube that goes from the exhaust side back to the intake, that's the egr cross over tube.

good chance it is not egr. iirc, the rule says engines manufactured after

jan 1, 2004. the tube mentioned above is stainless (probably discolored from heat) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/Pi...

Kevin, could it be that the 14.0L didn't change to EGR until 2004 t=like what you have posted?

I know the 12.7 switched to EGR in October of 2002. Here is a link to a PDF file that shows the EGR engine that had to match the emission law of October 2002. http://www.ddcsn.com/cps/rde/xbcr/ddcsn/...

It was originally a 2002 rule but it was pushed back to 2004 after I think CAT sewed the EPA

Cat couldn't meet the requirements so they went to 2004. Detroit and Cummins switched in October of 2002.

I remember Detroit running at full capacity the last quarter of 03 to stock pile engines that went into 04 truck until April of 04 and all the carriers were buying as many trucks as they could and mothballing them until they needed them. Detroit did run some test EGR engines in 02 and 03

Yep I remember too except it was the 3rd quarter of 2002. I remember my dad was with Sunflower at the time and neither one of us wanted anything to do with the new emissions. I didn't have to worry about it as I had just got my truck issued to me in Feb of that year but he was up for a new one. He told them he wanted one before the October deadline and he succeeded. He got one that was made a few months before and still had the 12.7 pre egr.
