How to read an oil sample?

I know it's probably an answer for a whole book (is there one?), but here is what I'd like to know specifically:

  • What each category means ( or most important ones ) and what are the "good" levels?
  • What to look for the most?
  • What are the critical levels they tell you to change the oil?
  • What is Oxidation and Nitration?
  • How can you tell if you have an internal coolant leak and fuel dilution problem?

As an example here are some samples from Polaris Lab:

Sample 1

Description

This is a CLEAN OIL SAMPLE right from bottle

Sample 2

Description

This is Eco-pure was installed before 3rd sample only, so first two samples were with full flow filters only.

  • Made switch from mineral to full synthetic Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 120.000 miles ago
  • Engine is 06 Acert with Fleet Air Filter and removed catalytic converter

Zooming is easy. Just click on the the image to bring up the large version, then zoom in your screen (this depends on your computer / browser)- most of the time hitting "Ctrl" (or "Cmd" if it's a Mac) and "+" will zoom your browser window in.

I have looked at your sample #2 I would suggest that you drain a few gallons I also change my big oil filters of oil to refresh and bring your base up but really its a good sample the high nitration is not a problem because none of the other things are high. Soot is ok, TBN is getting lower so to refresh is good this is also called "sweeten the sump". Also make sure your air filter is filtering properly. jerry

On the fuel dilution and antifreez in oil the fuel dilution will increase also you will have oil level increase in oil and smell fuel on the dip stick. On antifreez in oil the the water, potassium and sodium will rise and be flagged in the oil sample yours are fine also you will be slightly low on antifreez. If you notice a milky white color in the oil and the level is high on the dipstick you have a major water leak into the oil probably a head cracked or head gasket.

If you look at your report you will find a Ph# on it. When ever I'm not sure I call. They always very helpful understanding the report and making recommendations. I believe they are from OPS that handle the ?'s. Easier then bring to get thru to Kevin.
