Any ideas on the age old question, how to find driver's?

We started a small trucking company 12 years ago. The core business model was to supply excellent customer service, honesty and integrity. Using that model we have built a fantastic relationship with our shippers.

We have done it all on our own. We never leased on to anyone or have been company drivers. Therefore we really aren't sure what other people in the industry are looking for since we have nothing to compare to.

Our lease driver's gross approx $200,000 a year. We are home every weekend (sometimes once during the week also) We never go out without having a return trip planned. We have not averaged less than 2.00 a mile, all miles, in the last five years..

As far as finding professional/competent employees/ lease driver's we have not had the best of luck.

We built this business to suit your needs. We are having a hard time finding trucks, and we are just wondering if our situation sounds good or if since we haven't worked for someone else we are missing something.

So, if anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott, These numbers look pretty good to me. I think that most people leased to a carrier don't average 2.00 per mile and definitely don't get the home time you are talking about. So the pay and the home time seem good to me. Is the 2.00/ mile what your making or what the lease drivers are getting paid? Just a couple of questions for you, not relating to your question. What part of the country do you operate out of? Do you broker freight? I'm a single owner operator with my own authority, I have contracts for tanker freight May through December. I wouldn't mind finding a good company to work exclusively with Jan-April. I operate out of the north east.
