Have you checked to make sure the gauge is reading right. The radiator being aluminum isn't the problem cause aluminum dissipates heat really well. I've ran both in same truck first one was 2 roll aluminum and I didn't like heat so I bought a 3 roll copper and that was big mistake it ran hotter so when the 3 roll started leaking I went back to the 2 roll aluminum that was in it to begin with

At 220F you should be getting a stop engine light so Mel could be right about a bad gauge. My 3406e was running hot till I changed out the radiator.

Is your oil temp running normal? Oil temperature will usually climb along with coolant temp, not a definitive answer but a good place to start. Also how long has it been since you replaced the water pump?
