extending oil changes in a dodge ram?

I understand the reason for extended oil changes in larger heavy trucks. 8-10 gallons of oil is a huge chunk of change. But would there be any benefit in extending oil changes in a Cummins powered Dodge ? 3 gallons with a filter still adds up, especially today. Good idea or bad?

Cummins QuickServe website shows 15,000 mile interval. I have 320,000 miles, (so far), abd I have been doing mine @ 10,000.

With by-pass filtration and sampling you could go a lot further then 10,000.

I say good. I've ran regular Mobile Delvac oil fro 30,000 in my Detroit Series 60 without any type of bypass oil filtration. I don't see a problem running oil extended in a Dodge pickup. A sample will tell you lots about the engine too.

I would not extend the change intervals on anything without bypass filtration. Soot is your biggest enemy. Oil is much better these days but the full flow filter does nothing to remove soot, it only catches the large particles above 10 microns. The Bypass filters down to 1 micron which catches soot which is in the 3 to 4 micron range.

Get the bypass and safely extend those intervals. The samples will let you know how far to go before an oil change.

I think the issue is the time it takes to pay for the unit. With a big diesel you can usually have a pay off with in about 6 months of the cost of the unit and installation but with a little diesel unless you drive a bunch of miles and plan to keep it a long time it would be a pretty hefty expense. I have a Chevy Dually with a Duramax and have thought about it but don't think the cost could be justified cause I don't put a lot of miles on it.''italic text''

Oil bypass filtration, OPS, Gulf Coast filters keep the oil a lot cleaner than just the factory oil filter thus cutting down on engine wear and sludge. You can also stop draining your engine oil at oil change intervals where you just change the filters and add make up oil.
