Inaccurate fuel gauge on dashboard? W900l 2008?

2008 w900l when I first got it the would read empty it would take 230-260 gals but now when empty it only takes 180 gals and when half empty 90 gals. I have 2(150) gals tanks how come it shows as if I filled one tank when i filled both going to put in 3 rd fuel senser. Is this giving me an inaccurate reading on my fuel gauges I should be able to go 1000 miles without filling up now I only go 800-850 be for filling up. What is really going on?

Answer this question I have this problem too

You should be going by the actual gallons that you buy on the pump to do your Fuel Gauges topping off your tanks the same way ever time. It sounds like your sending units are giving a false reading. Check where the sending unit bolts into the top of the tank and check the connections. There will be a ground and a lead for the gauge. Make sure they are tight.

My sending unit was not working I went to Freightliner and they did not have one in stock and it was around $130. I bought a aftermarket universal one from Truck Pro for around $70 I was a little worried about it because it was so cheap. It was really slick the way it worked you measured the diameter of the tank, look at a chart then adjust the sending unit and dropped it in took about 30 minutes piece of cake works great. I also use the fuel gauge as a secondary reference I know how many miles I can go after I fill up.
