What year and engines to stay clear of

Looking to buy older truck to avoid egr etc. What year or model engines should i stay clear of? Don't mind doing in frame but don't want to spend time & money to find out that model was bad from the factory.

I would suggest a 2002 and older pre EGR truck. I run a Detroit series 60 and have been very pleased with it. I average about 7.5 mpg. I was a little nervous about running the Detroit because the last Detroit I drove was a 318 2 stroke which got about 3 mpg and was pretty weak however you could not kill it. I would suggest really doing your homework. You might want to check out Fitzgerald glider kits.

Good Luck

If I was able to run an older motor which I can't but it would be a E model CAT or 6NZ CAT

They all have their good points and bad. The big thing is that you stay pre egr. Congrats on that decision!

If you want to go pre egr you want to stay 2003 and older. For me I like the series 60 Detroit. I believe hands down its the most economical engine you can get. For me fuel mileage is everything and the series 60 Detroit can beat them all. Stay away from volvo and Mercedes and the M11 Cummins. The Cummins N14 and the Cat C12 were pretty good engines too. If your interested I have a 2003 freightliner columbia with a pre egr 60 series detroit 780K miles that I'm selling. The main thing is staying pre egr.....good descision. I'll stay pre egr for as long as I possably can.

Some of the ddec 3 engines had pistons that would break and ventilate the block/ruin the head. 1995 to 1999 or so were the years involved. If you can't find documentation for an overhaul, plan on doing it or redoing it. And this is experience talking.
