You have plenty of options:

1. The Volvo 780 (2.64 rear end, direct drive i-Shift transmission, D13 engine) would be ideal since you are planning to run California along with the other 47 states. You will need it to be a 6x4 since you do run mountains and occasionally may need a diff lock.

2. As others have suggested, check out Fitzgerald's glider kits. They work great if you plan on running everywhere EXCEPT California.

3. If you decide on the Volvo, You may also want to consider the XE13 Fuel Efficiency Package, which replaces the direct drive and 2.64stranny with an Overdrive transmission that allows the engine RPM to drop to 1100 at 65 MPH. The XE13 is ideally suited for an over-the-road driver who needs better fuel efficiency and an automatic transmission. 2.64 rear ends are spec'd automatically with the XE13.

4. Look at alternatives like Freightliner's Cascadia Evolution, which can easily get 10 MPG when hauling 80,000 pounds, while having similar features to the Volvo 780.

There are plenty of great options. You will have to research them and determine what's best for YOUR operation.
