Eaton 10 speed autoshift , indicator says F

I have a 10 speed smart shift 3 pedal system... in an 03 Century Freightliner. when truck is in cruise, occassionally the speedometer and tachometer go haywaire for a few seconds, while this is happening the gear indicator display an F, then all goes back to normal.. this happens several times a day..the problem does not seem to occur if we arent in cruise...

Like I said "JZ" I'm going to do some exploring, my numbers were just hypothetical, but I will come back in May 2013 with facts.

"F" means there is was a fault detected.

To retrive active fault codes starting with the key on (engine running or not) turn key off then back on 2 times in 5 seconds ending with the key on. Codes can be read on the gear display or service lamp.

To retrive inactive codes turn key off and on 4 times in 5 seconds.

To clear codes turn key off and on 6 times in 5 seconds

today i m start my truck the show me F error in scree and engin light, i dont no what i do, i come home and i open youtube i fine you sir your addvoice i take a photo copy and i did 2 time with in 5 sec the error is left, thanyou

These Eaton Auto trans works on sensors, and any alteration of power, heat or dirty air going in can make a serious problem. Do yourself a favor and make sure you have eatons manual handy, even mechanics at volvo dealer have to go through same procedure listed on road rangers pdf file on line. I just got a digital ohm meter from Amazon.com and i could trouble shoot almost any problem and fault codes before i let volvo charge me $100 an hour to do same easy !@#$ i can do myself. Just be careful when it comes to replace those sensors especially outer shaft speed sensors they usually dont come out and u might have to drop the whole drive shaft just to replace $40 sensors. I just replaced one sensor yesterday on side of the road yesterday. Theya are auto tranys and they operate with their own brains, they dont work like manual tranys. Just take good care of them and you will enjoy driving an auto transmission. If you seems to have major problem with them then there's something very wrong with both your electrical and air systems, which should be working right before the transimssion works the way it should.

I imagine "F" stands for fault. Maybe a bad sensor in the transmission

I had one of these in a Volvo 2001 with a Detroit 60.

I regret getting rid of this one only because of the engine which was pre EGR.

I had similar problems and eventually it led to having to rebuild the shift tower. My truck had the square box on the dash and the shift tower on the side of the seat had the shifter with the buttons on the side of the grip to manually shift the tranny.

That rebuild cost me over 3000.00 not counting the batteries I had to put in.

It seems that every time we bring these trucks in for service the first thing the dealer wants to do is install new batteries.

I will also point out that on my truck the slave cylinder on the clutch came in the vertical position and was not robust at all.

When I did a clutch job on the truck which was prompted by that slave cylinder falling right off one day....the mechanic put the new slave cylinder on that was bigger and it was installed horizontally. Bigger bolts (the old ones snapped off easily) came with the upgrade kit.

This issue always starts with a few codes, then you will experience nothing for a while, then the darn thing will start beeping to beat the band.

You can un hook the power to the ECM and Tranny ECM and it will go for a while.

But eventually it will just quit shifting all together.

These transmissions are power sensitive. Bad batteries,connections,grounds cab be a problem.

at batt box look inside 2 fuses 1 trans 1 ecm ck con at batt pull fuse clean up

My '07 2 pedal system was doing the same thing a couple months ago. Check the chassis ground near the battery box. Mine turned out to have a broken wire. Fixed the wire and it stopped that nonsense. Just my two cents. Sometimes it's that simple.

I just had the same problem. My speedometer would drop to 0, service light on my autoshift would flash, and gear indicator would alternate between the gear and F. Speed sensor pigtail was broken. Could be a bad speed sensor, or pigtail.

I had a like problem flashed F ,and locked up in 10th gear ,stopped and disconnected main power to the batteries for about 20-30 mins then hooked power back up and it was fine until,I got over to lincoln,ne and started giving me problems. I went to Eldons shop he replaced the speed sensor and its was fine.

thank you for all the help ..... we found a shop in vancouver wa that pulled all the electronic crap off the trand and put a stick on top of it for just a couple grand and !@#$ the thing has run like a top since. thank you all so much.

Tengo un freightliner Century del 2001 con una transmisión eaton el estaba trabajando bien d repente cuando le puse el clutch la velocidad no respondió lo apague y no arrancó le cambiaron el cable de arriba d la transmisión y todos los sensores el cable de la computadora d la transmisión q va a la batería, una parte del cable J39 q es el encargado de la comunicación entre la computadora del camion el

shif control la computadora d la transmisión....

En la pizarra dice q tiene 3 fallas activas

1) Trans acord-Ctr lador

No resp 130=254 07

2) Motor RSRVD

128 =216 14

3) Motor velocid carret

Malo 128 084 12

Estuvo 17 días en la freightliner de Tampa me dicen q da un código 65 q las computadoras no se comunican pero de repente se empiezan a comunicar el camión arranca salgo a trabajar todo bien y al siguiente día no arranca paso horas tratando hasta q arranca d nuevo sin mas ni mas si x favor alguien m puede dar una explicación a este problema me dicen d poner una manual pero soy mujer y m está mas cómoda
