What would you do?

I was coming up I85 in Newnan, gA when my truck stopped pulling. Service light was on the tower but I got it to the side of the road. Had it towed 730.00) 30 miles to Peach State Freightliner. They told me it was a clutch and few other things. Gave me an invoice of 4100.00. Called me up today and said we have bad news, you need a new transmission. I told them to put it back together so I could come get it and I would baby it up to my mechanic back home. WRONG. Truck wouldn't shift past 4 or 5. It finally did, but you could hear a roar underneath and it sputter. I got it back to Peach State. And will have the load picked up tomorrow. Do you think I can make it back bobtail? What is that roaring sound? It shifted fine before.

I'm so depressed and down like never before and just need some advice and encouragement.

What model is it? 4th or 5th depending on the model is where the trans is trying to range select. If so could be your synchronizer has failed causing the growling. If it is this will not allow the trans to make the shift to high range. This failure is relatively common in manual road rangers due to some drivers not pre selecting their range changes. While much more rare in an auto not totally unheard of. If this is the problem it only requires auxiliary box repair not total transmission service. I would pull all drain plugs from the unit as well as the p t o plate and look for extra pieces good luck

If it won't make it home, take it to the McDonough office...I have had much better success with that shop, they seem to actually know something about the trans. Peach State in Forest Park doesn't have anybody that really knows anything about the trans. I have a 10 speed Ultra-shift and won't take it to the Forest Park location...I discovered the hard way that they just guess and throw parts at a problem...McDonough was able to save me over $3600 the last time when Forest Park told me the trans ECM was going out, only to find the X Y shifter had failed. Exit 221 off 75 south, top of ramp turn left. Follow signs.

I made it back bobtail. No 5th and no 10th. A puddle of trans fluid sitting under my truck now. I have a friend of mine who is going to look at it tomorrow. I would think it is the tranny. But I'm not a mechanic. I just have a bad feeling that I am going to have to park the truck for a while and go back to company driving.

8900.00 to change it over? Just dropped 3600.00 for nothing. I'm looking at parking it at my mechanic's shop, trying to find a used tranny and put that in and sell it. Going to have to drop my own authority Monday. I have never been a quitter but I think it's over.

Don't give up that easy, was just looking at another forum and someone was having the same issue you were. The guy said it was the "range valve," it is worth a shot. He changed it in a parking lot so it cant be that difficult. Also try a hard reset, take you wire loose at your batteries negative terminal let it sit for about 30 min maybe as much as 1 hour. This is the first thing I would do. I have to do this sometimes when my transmission wont go back to neutral and you cant start the truck. I wouldn't give up without putting up a fight first. And I wouldn't listen to Peach State they are crooks and don't know what they are doing, just like that other poster, they throw parts at it because they don't know what it is. Your clutch has nothing to do with your transmission not shifting, it is bullcrap!
