Check for an air leak in the line, air dryer to governor. Use soapy water in a spray bottle, and check fittings also.

'''It could be one of three things, possibly the governor but not usually the cause but they're fairly cheap and easy to swap out to check and it's always good to keep a spare anyway.

Could be the purge valve in the bottom of the air dryer. You might crawl under it while it's running and see if there is any air leaking out the bottom of the dryer, also fairly cheap and easy to replace.

Most likely culprit if you have a Bendix air dryer it will have two air lines coming off the air governor probably #4 stratoflex or braided air lines, one will go from the governor to the air tank and the other will go from the governor to the air dryer. As the other poster said spray these lines down with soapy water or 409 and look to see if they start foaming up, if they do replace these lines. They are bad to dry crack under the fabric of the line due to excessive heat around the engine and you can't hear the air leak because the fabric dampens the sound.'italic text''

If you have have not service your air drier on over a year, this is an indicator of servicing being required. If the filter assembly is maxed out on service life, the unit will continue to attempt to purge itself. I recently had that happen to me. A simple filter and blow off valve kit fixed me right up. Side not, primary function of governor is control system pressure, and nothing else.

Had the same problem, turned out to be the line from the governor. The one that sends the signal, had a small hole from where it had rubbed on a bracket. It will only leak when it is trying to send a signal between the air dryer and governor. So it may not be a continuous leak. I replaced my valve on the air dryer and it was continuing to pop. While I was trying to figure what to do next I noticed the air leak when it sent the signal. Not a 100% sure, but my guess is that when the air dryer pops it sends a burst of air back to the governor to stop the air compressor from pumping air. Its cheaper to check the lines than to replace a valve or air dryer.

My air dryer started blowing off like that and it turned out to be the unloader valve in the head of the compressor. Not a bad job to change at all. There is a little oval shaped plate on the top of the head of the compressor with a torq screw it it. Remove the screw and the plate, then remove the unloader. Its basically a plunger with 2 o-rings on it and a spring on the bottom. Check to see that the o-rings are not damaged, and that the spring is not broken or gummed up. The gasket on the oval shaped plate can also fail, letting air leak out there.

What is your air gauge doing? Are you loosing air and having to rebuild it?

My first guess is air governor, no real way to inspect it, just replace it $18 part you can do yourself.

not losing air, gauges staying steadt at approx 130 psi, used to fluctuate between 110-130

I had the same problem years ago. Do yourself a favor and just change them little 1/4 inch air lines. They do not cost very much and will save you alot of time.
