Pro's and con's of switching to ProfitGauges

I am currently using ATBS for my accounting and bookkeeping. What is the relationship (if any) between ATBS and ProfitGauges and what would be the Pro's and con's of switching over? I like the idea of being able to see an overview of how I am doing online 24/7 as opposed to relying on calling a business consultant. Then there is obviously the monthly cost difference. Is there anything else I am missing that would help me weigh out the decision?

Thanks

Good questions Tim,

The real difference in the 2 systems is, who is handling the receipts and doing the data entry. So, if you switch to profitGauges you'll be investing a little more time into that part of your business, but I've found that people who do, tend to understand the numbers on a deeper level because of it.

Your reporting in ProfitGauges includes accurate Cost Per Mile and Revenue Per Mile metrics, as well as percentage of revenue in all expense categories. You can run your own reports monthly, quarterly and yearly to make comparisons anytime. Your monthly report also shows your monthly average revenue and all expense categories, so with just a glance you can see how you're doing each month, compared to your own averages.

You've already mentioned the cost savings, and the access to your reports.

We are integrated with ATBS for tax purposes, so at the end of the year in ProfitGauges, you send your year end numbers electronically and still get their top notch tax service.

The only other thing I can think of that your missing is that ATBS does the tax filing. I also use ATBS but I use ProfitGauges too so I can track the numbers a little more closely, and I feel it helps me verify that they are doing things right. I know the amount I pay ATBS is about right for tax filing and representation if the IRS comes knocking so I feel I can justify paying for both services and feel that its still cost effective.

I use ATBS. I had always done my own taxes my whole life even as a company driver for 16yrs. Then when we bought our own truck I let ATBS do it. I quess I will continue to let them do it at least filing my taxes for now. My problem with them has been numbers, didn't always seem, "just right". Now I have a system that's right there to question what they have. I LIKE THAT.

I have been driving and doing bookkeeping/taxes for drivers for years. But, like Kevin, I have gotten out of doing this and just advising drivers. I fully endorse everything Kevin has said and the programs he has offered. The plus side of you doing your own books is that you can create as many sub-categories as you wish and get a cost per mile for as many different areas that you want to see. If you are not a tax expert, then keep using ATBS for your tax filings and get the best of both. I am not aware of the exact pricing through ATBS, but any business will charge less for tax filings, as opposed to doing the monthly bookkeeping and then also doing the taxes.

We are in the same situation, and are most likely going to drop ATBS for the monthly service. We signed up for PG in addition to ATBS, in order to get ourselves organized with our business paperwork, and now that we see how easy it is, and so much cheaper than ATBS, we are wondering why we should pay ATBS, except for tax time? Frankly, they don't seem to do much for us. I can enter our stuff into PG so easily! Being new O/Os we thought they would be giving us more guidance every month. PG reports are easier to read and we like the organization it's given us. The Neat Receipts feature adds even more organization for us, and we already own a NR mobile scanner. We can use every penny saved in other places. Keeping ATBS for taxes for now, but they have disappointed us so far with our taxes, calling us for documents that were sent into them! The ATBS Maintenance program for the truck HAS been great, and they have given us a lot of good recommendations with the truck. Just my two cents, as we're in the decision mode, as well.

One other important note on ATBS vs. PG..

ATBS already has benchmarks in place that let you know how you are doing compared to other truckers using ATBS.

Also, ATBS gives you a Profit Loss Report which also shows per mile and percentage costs, so that's not a bonus to PG.

With ATBS, they can answer any tax/accounting questions I have (and I have had a lot) and they have helped me any time I have called. They can also help you figure out what is tax deductible or not, or what category certain things go in.

Does ProfitGauges provide any kind of downloadable file to save/store/share that is generated from all the information you enter online? For example, besides their reports that can be generated, is there a pdf or xls file (or any other format) that can be downloaded to save all my accounting information I have entered?

I'm not crazy about the idea of all my accounting only being available online and not backed up on my own computer.

Yes, the reports are PDF and you can save them to your computer. Your receipts, etc, would be your backup for the PDFs.
