Pull fuel supply off of Davco (if you have one). Junk may be stopping check valve ball from doing its thing.

Last time I lost prime (overnight), it was a bad o-ring on an injector. There was no noticeable fuel in the oil that morning, but 200 miles down the road, oil pressure was down 15 PSI and there were several gallons of fuel in my oil. Probably not a common cause of losing prime, but check your oil!

I had the same issue with a D12. It was leaking past the injector cup orings, but not into the oil but into the cooling system. If this is the case with yours you may smell fuel in the coolant or even over filling your coolant tank. This is quite a common issue. Since special tools are required you would be wise to bypass the other shops and go directly to a good Volvo dealer.

I run a 2010 VNL780 D 13 and keep loosing prime anytime the engine was shut down, replaced fuel filter housing because the prime pump was shot. and that still did not solve the issue. Pulled the injectors and all of them only had the top O ring in place. I replaced the injector cups and installed new O rings top & bottom on the injectors. Now the engine starts in a couple cranks. Problem Solved. about 610 K miles on the truck.
