Tire selection in a Super B ie: 8 axel 140,000lbs

Im wondering if with the weight and number of tires will a lower rolling resistance tire on the drives make much difference? im looking at swapping my xdn2 24.5 tall tires with xda3 low pro 24.5. Also with the trailers the company has very high rolling resistance 22.5 recaps, will there be enough gain by offering them that i pay the difference to have a low rolling resistance 22.5 swapped on. im struggling in the 4.5-5 mpg US range and cant find any info on our heavy'er applications. 60,000lbs empty, 140,000 lbs loaded

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I added all of my tires rolling resistance together then divided by the number of tires. I came out with an average rr of 128 for all 30 tires. With changing my drive tires and the worst retreads I can bring it to an average of rr 110.66. But if I went xta energy on the trailer all around with my drive tire change I can hit an ave rr of 93.4. If I'm figuring right that's a 27% gain??

With all those tires, rolling resistance is very important. Bandag makes a fuel tech trailer recap, which I use on a michelin casing. Changing to low profile tires will also help rolling resistance some, and getting rid of the xdn2 on the drives will help some more.

What kind of trailers are you pulling that weighs 60000 mty? Consider adding air tabs to the rear of your sleeper and both trailers unless they are flatbeds.

Are you loaded both ways, if not also consider lifting some trailer axles when mty.

They are LPG bottles, the side walls of the trailer are 3/4 of an inch solid steel. I called into Kevin last night and he was saying pretty much the same thing, I don't think air tabs will help much because the trailers are round. I have one of the only trailers on the fleet with lift axels. What's the rolling resistance on that cap? He was saying that I may be right in my thinking of getting a return from myself paying for the tire upgrades. I just need to do some home work now, figuring the rr and price and break even.
