engine light comes on after about half hour?

after driving for while the engine light comes on (some days flickers on and off then stays on)

egr was done and it started doing this new trick on drive home.

Many trucks with this engine (especially Freightliners) will come with a dash display (usually doubling as the odometer) that can show the fault code via an error message as well as flashing the check engine/stop engine lights. For example, "ECU 128" is a general fault code for a sensor failure.

Code 23, Code 63, 39 and 43 sound like EGR issues or sensor failures. Take it back to the shop and give them the error codes, or if you have a service manual, look up the codes in the book to find out what is wrong.

EGR is such a pain to fix that you should also consider the Pittsburgh Power version: get rid of the EGR.

Is this a gold-colored truck? If so, what is the VIN?

Check the plug to egr valve, pull off, put back on.

Mine did that too, started coming on, out...was EGR Valve code.

That could be the Vpod also.

After few miles mine running wild, rough and horrible Check Engine would come on and it would "calm" down and run better but de-rated with half of the power. Failure in the EGR system.

A Detroit tech confessed to me "..nobody hear us, forget, you can throw as many parts you want, this thing is miserable, it's a mistake, wasn't projected to work, just to pass on emission regs, simple and pure, there's NO solution for S60 DDEC V EGR engines..."

I"ve learned hardway. Two turbos, EGR cooler, EGR Valve, very poor MPG (I call it 5's running 60mph), a freaking whistle sound from the VG Turbo, no power at all, Turbo actuators, VPOD's chips, u name it, i've spent 10k in that %**# EGR system. NADA, nothing. CRAP!

The only solution I've found was Pittsburgh Power. After that, sweet. No EGR codes, performance is incredible and I've gain 1 full mpg. The truck is monster, running up hills My DDEC 5 is making high 7's in the last 40k miles, to don't mention the several times it reached 8.5 mpg, but the 40k average is high 7's mpg.

The best advice from somebody who suffered a lot with this nasty thing is: get rid of this EGR. Only way to go.

Do you know how to check the codes? If not here is what you do....

Turn the key off and wait 5 minutes. Now hold the Overide button or switch down and turn the key to start. Do not start the truck. Watch for the engine light to start blinking and it will do so with codes. 1 blink means 1 4 blinks is 4. So if it blinks 4 times and then pauses and blinks 3 times, that is code 43. Let us know here what you come up with.

The problem I think is the EGR codes sometimes come later, after you running the truck. When you start the truck, its was off in my case. After running it for 30 minutes, chk eng light came...In my case. It was code for EGR valve fault.

please help help help

I have a freightlner Century 2000 with a Detroit engine 12.7.. My truck is running but it is turning the checking engine light on and off. when it turns on, the truck kind of cough (make a noise like going stop) but is something quick. i get some white smoke every time.. about 600 miles ago I have the fault code 128. but it went away, now this problem is more often. I think it may be like a wire or a fuse moving or something like that, or maybe an injector.. What could the problem be??
